Morpho didius

from $100.00

Found only in the tropical rainforests of South America, butterflies of the genus Morpho are known for their quite unbelievable colouration. To simply call them “blue” would be to betray how this colour shifts as one moves even slightly - from sky, to electric, to deep ocean and violet hues. Perhaps no other genus of insects is capable of provoking so consistently the question Is that real?

Equally fascinating is what is not obvious. Normally, colours in nature are generated by molecules which absorb and reflect particular wavelengths of light. Instead, the wings of Morpho butterflies are adorned by many thousands of tiny irridescent scales - these scales diffract the light instead of simply reflecting it, which causes the unique shifting effect. This fact is also great for the collector, since it ensures that the colour never fades due to exposure to light.

The specimen displayed here is a Morpho didius, a classic species of Morpho butterfly found only in Peru. Our Morpho specimens are sourced from conservation farms, ensuring that wild populations are not diminished.

We offer two options for this frame. A1 specimens are almost perfect; A2 specimens have minor tears on the wings and may be missing antennae, but are just as stunning for a lower price.
